This is a serious question.
I would like a resume of factions in the middle east (shiites, sunni, etc) - where they're from, what are their differences, can they reconcile these differences, and examples of breakdown by country would be nice too.
Thanks - always have to try and understand the world better.
(Again, seriously, I will be asking the same thing of my "christian" friends soon, but I think the response may be more complex).
Take it easy!

This is more complex then Yahoo Answers mate go to an Islamic forum, same goes for the Christian sects question except it's a Christian forum obviously.

The question isn't just about the Shias and Sunnis I believe it's more like Wahabis, Hanafis, etc.

One example is:

Iran is also mostly Shia.

Even the sects have different groups-just as Christians do. I think you need to look this up. It is too complex to address here.

But, Islam is not a national thing. It is a faith and culture that transcends borders and countries. You will find Shia and Sunni scattered among the world.

though i don't have an answer to ur question (i know, but its quite complex to explain, and if Not explained right, it can be misleading), i think u should ask this from a Muslim Scholar Not on yahoo answers.
but, we should keep in mind, that we are told in The Holy Quran, Not to be categorized in factions, as we all are given the name of 'Muslim'. Peace to All.

it began when the prophet (saws) died, abu bekir became caliphate, shiite muslims believed ali should have been caliphate as he was married to Fatima and he was his cousin. that is all the differences are they have slightly different views of who they prefer, both ali and fatima are regarded in high esteem.
there are many shiites in lebanon and iraq of course, they are everywhere the majority are sunni.
they were badly treated in iraq by s.h.

their main difference started due to a political reason(something to do with the caliphate chosen)
But both believe in God and Muhammad as His last messenger.
U should surf the net to get more information regarding both of them
