Even though I hate windows I am stuck with it.
There is a problem getting drivers for linux and programs for mac. I run a bunch of software on my computer and have a lot of peripherals. When I was looking for a replacement machine I looked at linux and called printer and scanner manufacturers for the ones I had. Several said that linux would not work with their equipment. Unless I buy the mac that is windows-compatible my collection of programs is not going to run on a mac and that is a big deal for me.

I still use Windows and Linux. Windows is the monster that 90 percent of programs are written for. If Linux got more popular I would dump Windows in a minute!

Windows XP for the home user is way easier in the long run. Cost isn't really a consideration as most people I've serviced pirate it anyway.
Linux is fun and I personally enjoy working with it. That's the problem though. If you don't want to tinker and you just want it to work, Windows XP is best. I wouldn't pee on a Mac from my experience as certified Apple tech for 12 years.
I could give 20 examples in the last three months during servicing Apple systems where the computer user is average in their abilities as a user. They can install software, change wallpaper, manage files. If it breaks they end up calling someone (me).
The three of them switched to Mac mini's and Powerbooks because they were afforable and "cool" looking. Unfortunately they forgot that printers for Mac's are three times the cost, one of them lost their warrenty when they phoned Apple support and ask about a monitor problem. Apple figured out that the monitor was not purchased from Apple and promptly told them "no support" for you. The monitor manufacture told them phone Apple. Anyhoo, I charge my Apple clients about twice as much because the OS is pain to deal with when it breaks.
So to give you an idea of what I charged to get the monitor issue fixed because Apple support sucks. It was $210 labour minus tax and a piece of hardware to get it to sync properly.
Windows users I don't bother asking if it's a legit copy if it needs to be fix. I just ask they leave their software/keys with me when I'm doing the fix up. I charge, per hour, $40 on a drop off and $80 house visits. Way easier to fix. lots of support, lots of software and you can find LOTS of cheap hardware.
Linux is bottom of the pole for the home user. It really is a techie based. But, BUT....if you haven't got a dime, you don't have pirate copy of XP or friends with a copy XP then it will do in a pinch. Software is a pain though. If you are looking at Linux I suggest Ubuntu linux. Slick and Ready to go.
Word of warning. None of the guys working for me (10 techs) support linux that well and it was an interview requirement for my shop. Much like most junior and intermediate techies they talk big game, but push comes to shove, I end up doing the work because I've worked with linux/unix for 9 years. Plus I'm the boss and I need my clients happy.
So that's the 20 year techie/contractor/shop owner perspective.

I prefer Windows right now, but am wanting to switch to Linux because it is free and open source. It takes a little getting used to, I am working on it though.

I prefer windows...most hackers, from what I know of hacking culture, prefer linux. Haven't used a mac in a while, so I don't know how great the operating system is...
Whenever you're going to buy one, try to get a demo from the place that sells it to you.
