What you're describing is not sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is literally when you stop breathing in your sleep and you are usually startled awake as you gasp for you first breath. Risk factors for sleep apnea include obesity, snoring, and hypertension.

I don't remember the name of it, but there is a phenomenon that occurs when some people are very close to sleep. They are suddenly jolted awake by the feeling that they are falling. I have had this happen to me and learned that it actually happens to many people but not very often.

Check with you physician and see if they can schedule you for a sleep lab. This is an area of one of your local hospitals where you are connected to monitor and watched closely as you sleep. Brain waves and behavior are recorded and analyzed. This may help diagnose your problem.
