It varies with insurance companies usually you have like 48 hours to contact your agent. What I have done in the past is contact the agent even if they are closed and leave a voice mail descbing the vechilce, make, model vin# and when I bouhgt it then follow up with a call verifing that they got the info from my phone call. But you do need to do it right away.

I'm surprised that they let you drive off the lot w/o full coverage considering that you are making payments on it.
You should have purchased the coverage prior to leaving the lot. HOWEVER, the dealer may have purchased and added to the bill a seven day insurance binder. In any case, get insurance now as you DO NOT want your finance co. to force place comp/collision coverage as it is REALLY EXPENSIVE!!

Normally the Dealer will call Your Insurance Company to inform them that you have payments but if you have the car already I'd say hurry up ASAP.I know the feeling cause I have 2 more years of payments I wasn't allowed to drive away till I had full coverage lol.Good Luck

I just bought a new car and the car lot told me I needed full-coverage immediatly. I don't know if there are laws on this or what, but I'd go get insurance today if I were you.

It's not a violation not to have comprehensive of collision. It's a violation not to have third-party liability.
My policy gives me 30 days to notify my insurance company that I bought a new or replacement car. Then they will bill me from the date I bought it. The coverage I get for that car is the same as I had, unless I change it.
But you need to look at your own policy or ask your agent.
Also, if you have a car loan and don't get comprehensive and collision insurance immediately and prove to the lender you have it, they will buy alternative insurance on your behalf -- VERY EXPENSIVE -- and you will have to pay for it. They won't cancel the cover until you show them your (cheaper) policy.

If your financing through a bank you have 7 days because upon that first payment they will tack on a very high insurance coverage if you don't have any.

in case you fiscal a clean vehicle, the lender will require finished coverage and may even specify the minimum quantities for that coverage. in case you have not got the right coverage, whilst the lender unearths out, they'll immediately upload their costly coverage on your month-to-month bill. If the vehicle isn't financed, i might nonetheless propose finished coverage except you have hundreds of greenbacks on your pocket to pay to restoration it in case you do get in an twist of destiny.
