There is no scientific proof of any way to get rid of a cold, ie: large doses of vitamin C, zinc ozide lozenges, etc. There are thousands of different strains of the common cold. After you catch one, your immune system is "immunized" for that particular strain. You are not likely to catch the same strain again.
After you feel the effects of a cold, your immune system is already fighting the thousands of virus cells. The only thing you can do is to let the cold run it's source. You can buy over the counter products to lessen the effects. The normal cold virus will run it's course usually within a week or so. Keep a check on your temperature, as the symptoms could be the flu or other problems. So keep a close watch if symptons do not go away or worsen. See your doctor if problems persist or worsen, especially swollen lymph glands in neck or high temperature, especially in infants or older adults, or people with a weakened immune system. So just maintain a healthy diet. and if needed, over the counter products will lessen the effects,(runny nose, sore throat, etc.) within a week or so. If not, or running a high temperature, see your doctor.

This isn't a sure cure, but it will make you less miserable:
Drink hot lemon and honey. And hot bouillon. Breathe in steam: That will help clear your nose.
Keep cough drops to suck on so you get a steady stream of medicine to control the symptoms.
Eat things with raw onions and hot peppers in them, if you can: There's something in those two foods that cold germs don't like.
Gargle mouthwash and salt water frequently, and wash wash wash! That way you won't reinfect yourself. Also- and this is something I do, and I've not gotten sick since I did that- in the morning after you brush your teeth, pour a little alchohol over your toothbrush to kill any germs there. Again, that will prevent reinfection.
Good luck!

Linus Pauling was correct. Lots of vitamin C will prevent a cold if taken fast enough, or shorten the duration of a cold. I take 2000mg every 4 hours at the 1st sign of a cold, along with echinacea (the herbalist's penicillin) to boost your immune system and zinc. But be sure to take zinc on a full stomach or you'll get a stomachache. Gets lots of rest and drink a lot of water.

Can't really cure a cold. All you can do is temper the symptoms. Drink plenty of fluids and soups. Not an old wives' tale. This flushes out your system of impurities. (Got this directly from a doctor/friend.) Take a decongestant and cough syrup for the nasal issues and cough. Going forward, take vitamins and try drinking a few cups of herbal tea (I do ginger.) to help keep your immune system up.

Takes at least 10 days before it decides to leave the body. Try Oregano oil drops in a bottle of water 2-3 times a day. You can get it online and maybe thru GNC. I just read how it is a germ killer and good for the cold/flu bugs.

try nyquil or dayquil, and take decongestants. the decongestants will loosen up your cold and make it easy to come out. this is especially true if you have a sore throat...sometimes mucus build-up makes your throat sore, and as soon as you yak it out, it feel better! but take it even if your throat isn't sore, cuz you have an accumulation somewhere. also, all the anxiety about you heading off to college could be lowering your immune system. so try to relax, drink plenty of water and apple juice and get lots of rest. i guarantee you'll be feeling better. oh yeah, and don't eat too much sugar! that lowers your immune system too. good luck on your freshman year of college! study hard!

A sure cure - -at least for me - - is a small heated shot glass of apple cider vinegar mixed with a teaspoon of Honey. Sounds funny, and tastes nasty, but honestly it works. In fact, there are books on this mixture that tout benefits well beyond curing a simple cold.

Garlic pills or the real thing chewed, garlic is a natural antibiotic. Get some garlic pills and take a pill three times a day every day, you may end up with some side affects such as gas but it sure works. You can get garlic tabs at the dollar store for a dollar.

Cure of cold: it takes seven days if you take something, a week if you don't. (Old wife's tale)
What I do is take something to make you more comfy, drink lots of liquids, and force myself to drink as much chicken noodle soup as I can stand. It really helps. Stay warm, but not too warm, don't get too cold, either. Just float along, and the cold will be gone. Wash your hands whenever you think of it.
