According to Harold Thau, a self-professed friend of John Denver and apparently his business and personal manager, it was indeed Randy Sparks who suggested the name change while John was playing at Ledbetters, an LA club owned by Randy and his lovely wife Diane.

Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. was urged by friends to change his name if a recording career was to be in his future. His friends suggested the name John Sommerville, but he ultimately took his stage name from the beautiful Rocky Mountain capital city of Colorado, his home state.

Yes. And here is another little tidbit for you. He chose the name John Denver because it had the same initials as his real name. This was important because he was poor at the time and his luggage had J. D. stamped on them.

There was a kid who grew up in Arlington, Texas. He auditioned for a singing act at Six Flags Over Texas. He was told, in so many words, "Kid, you'll never make it!"
Later he change his name to John Denver, his adopted home town.
