I am a member of the LDS church...and a friend and I are debating on the subject of drinking Green Tea. If there are any SERIOUS priesthood holders out there who can answer this puzzling question for me...it would be helpful. I know that Green Tea is good for your health...but it's a matter of Obedience for me...and I don't want to drink it if it is one of the "restrictions" (for lack of better term) set forth by the Word of Wisdom.

I am LDS and I have ran this question by my husband who is a Priesthood holder. He and I both believe that green tea is ok. Any herbal teas are acceptible. They even serve herbal tea at the church owned gourmet restaurant in SLC, The Roof.

No, Green Tea is from the same plant as black and white tea.
What makes black tea, black is how it's processed. Green tea is not put thru that same process, nor is white tea, but they are all the same.
And you know the Word of Wisdom has never been about caffeine, it's about obedience to the law.
I had this same question myself a while back, so stick to the red punch and the green jello at the ward party. :)

I am not a Mormon but I do know some Mormons and their restrictions. The Mormons I know abstain from caffeine. GreenTea does have some caffeine in it-less than coffee and soft drinks. However, there is decaffeinated green tea available. Green tea is very nutritious providing many antioxidants. Based on fellow Mormon friends green tea is acceptable to following their faith.

I BELIEVE that the rule against drinking Tea and coffee stems from the caffeine in them, thus rendering both a drug. Green tea is caffeine free, so I think you're safe, but you should check with your... (is it a minister in LDS? Priest? I'm sorry - I don't know the name!) to be certain.
Bright Blessings!

My personal view is that tea is tea. However on my mission, we were teaching a lady who was dating a guy that was inactive in the church. His mom was active, and drank a lot of green tea. So my companion and I asked the local bishop. He said that it applied only to black tea.
I still refrain from any tea, because I've never seen any need to drink it.

No. The drinks that are against the Word of Wisdom are black and green teas, and coffee. Herbal teas are fine.

I was told by two that are Mormon, tannin is the ingredient in regular tea that they stay away from.
I don't know if tannin is in green tea.
One Mormon that told me that is in Odessa Texas. The other one is here in New Mexico that told me this.

So if it's not a matter of the caffeine, then where's the problem?? Are you drinking it during the service? Then bring enough for everyone.
Is the "Mormon god" against the color green? Add food coloring.
Is the "Mormon god" against green tea because it comes from Japan and few Japanese are Mormon?
I don't see where the problem is!!!!!!!!!!

Here's what President Brigham Young said, "there is no better medicine than green tea, and where it is thus used it should be drank sparingly."
I hope this helps.
