It depends on individual.There is no such thing as right or wrong in any case. If the girl is unable to take the blow, people deem that you have do the wrong thing. On the other hand if she is able to take it, both of you still can be good friends. So in any case I suggest that after you leave your gf, you should not start a relationship with her best friend immediately. You should let it cool down for a while before you start a relationship with her best friend to avoid an argument between the girls

Well I actually had a girl i dated set me up with her best friend,a kind of odd situation I'd say, so in rare cases yes, but handled very, very delicately.
Best case scenario break it of with the girlfriend first, on good terms, give it some time, and darn well seek her blessing to pursue a relationship with her best friend. If you drive a wedge between them or make them choose and they'll both wind up despising you and/or each other, dangerous territory so tread carefully and abandon hope all ye who enter here.
