Yesterday when he awoke he has pooped his pants and I thought he must have just done it and did not think it was at night. Keep in mind he has not had a accident for over a year. This morning when he woke, same thing. I could tell it had been done for a while. What is going on, why is he doing this, he has no idea why, he was sleeping! Help!!!! PS - It is not runny or anything, solid, he is not sick.

First of all avoid any suggestion that it is 'bad' or 'naughty'. He obviously couldn't help it. Just an 'Oh dear! What a shame, never mind!' or something like that is all that's necessary. Has anything changed in his life recently?

It may be something he is worried about (like going to kindergarten for the first time, perhaps?) or it could be just a phase and will sort itself out naturally.

I would discuss it with your child's physician before jumping to the conclusion that he's even aware it's occurring.

My son is 13 and autistic. He will still occasionally poo at night into his Pull-Up. But... it's rare now that we figured out what was going on:

Sometimes kids (all kids, not just ones with disabilities) will get a little "backed up." When they do, some poo might escape without them realizing it... or some is sort of attached to the walls of the intestines, so what passes through is not very big around and passes right through what's backed up.

The child has no sensation of this, except maybe in extreme cases, a feeling of fullness.

For some kids, all they need is a high fiber snack and lots of water to loosen things up. Sometimes it's necessary to use a stool softener or mild laxative. For my son I have to pull out the big guns and use a prescription version called "Glycolax" which is like Metamucil or something... it's a cellulose that causes your body to sort of pull fluid to the lower intestines where it will finally allow the backed up stool to release from the intestinal wall.

I have a friend who is a nurse and the same thing happened to her daughter when she was about 9. The little girl was mortified and kept hiding her undies because she was so embarrassed that she was having "accidents" at her age! Finally, when her mom did the laundry she saw... and knew right away what was going on... so a couple of bowls of shredded wheat later :) all was right with the world.

If there is any doubt about this, by the way, an abdominal x-ray will give you proof positive (or not) about what's going on. Sometimes with younger children (especially those who are now toileting alone) will get busy with play and sort of "hold" their poo. Then they get backed up. Because Mom isn't there now every single time they toilet, or changing the diaper to see what they're putting out... it sort of goes unnoticed that they're not pooing as much or every day or whatever.

Speak to your physician... but I'd try to sort of "loosen him up" with his diet and see if he does a couple of massive poos and then stops having accidents while he's asleep.

It is possible that your little one feels like pooping at a certain time. Unfortunately that time is sleeping time. He is either too sleepy to be bothered to get up and go or he is afraid to get up when its dark. Talk to him and reassure him that you will be up at night if he feels like pooping and so he should wake you up at least. Also, leave on a small light on in his room so he does not feel scared. For one night, keep an eye on his sleeping pattern and check on him constantly. You will lose some sleep, but you will find your answer. You can even sleep in his room after he goes to sleep so that he does not expect you to do so each night. Dont worry so much as you dont want to pass on your worry to your son, if he already has a problem. Show him mommy is always there when he needs her.

Accidents happen.... even though it has been a year.

What was he dreaming at the time? Was he dreaming that he was going to the bathroom?

Sorry that it happened but I am sure that he wouldn't do it on purpose especially if he has been potty trained and no accidents for over a year.

My child did the same thing....except he peed several nights in a row! I was starting to worry about what was bugging him (mentally), but then he stopped. I had started to watch my sister's kids around that time, so maybe he was just reverting back to his younger times with the confusion of dealing with other children. I don't know, but as soon as it started, it was over. Don't worry about it. I'm sure he is fine.

It could be a subconscious way to get you to baby him more. Has there been a big change in his life like starting daycare, someone moving in or out of the home or another child in the family?

He may have developed a new fear of something in his room or near him at night that keeps him 'stuck' in his bed.

He's only young, did you try asking him why he did it?

If it keeps up, you might want to take him to the bathroom in the night once or twice. Help him along.

Good luck!

Alot of kids revert. Have there been any changes in his life lately? Any new siblings arrive in the family? Any major family changes?
