People always forget about the roots!!! Plants DO grow below ground! If a plant does not have roots, how is it going to take up water and nutrients? Plant roots actually do grow (think of a tree!). Some nutrients in the soil are immobile, like potassium, so the roots have to grow in the soil to come in contact with it in order for the plant to take it up.

Plants need sunlight for the leaves so it can photosynthesize and it also needs roots underground so it can take up water!

take a shoe box and make hole in one of its sides. fill the box wih soil and grow a plant in it. close the lid of the box and water the plant through the hole . after few weeks you will notice that plan will grow towards the hole, not straight because it will get sunlight through the hole, not straight.
