I think that sounds cool. Just make sure that the parents will want to spend money on feeding and vet costs for the dog.

first thing to ask is how old is the Friend in question. If they are young I would say that a pet fish would be a better start. See how they handle the responsibility of feeding the fish and cleaning the bowl, before moving on to a dog. A dog is a full time job to look after. I have an Aussy he will sometime wake me up in the middle of the night to go outside. Is your friend ready for that. And there might be a bit of a problem adjusting to the new home and the dog might have an accident to two before it get used to it. Also i would suggest a dog that is already housebroken a puppy is a much bigger job then a dog but a dog is still allot of work.

No, its not a good idea to get her a puppy. Having a pet like that is a huge responsibility, and you are not in a position to determine if she is ready to handle that. Not to mention that there are a lot of expenses that come with having a dog like that after the initial cost of buying it, such as vet bills (which tend to be expensive for puppies), and LOTS of dog food, possible training classes..... Her parents might be using the "don't want to spend the money" line as an easy excuse not to get your friend a dog, but more than likely there are a number of reasons why they aren't getting one. By buying your friend a puppy, you're really buying her entire family a puppy, which they may not be happy about. Best to leave a big decision like that up to the immediate family. I'd stick with getting her the fish, and a nice tank and accessories. That will be expensive on its own!

I see 3 potential problems her:
1. Never buy a pet store puppy-( who bred this dog? in what conditions?)
2. Giving a puppy as a gift is like saying"Here is AT LEAST a 10 year commitment to feeding, caring for, grooming and paying vet bills. I agree with the previous poster - you aren't in a position to make that call.
3. If her mom and dad don't want to spend the $$ for the dog- they probably aren't ready for vet bills which can be costly.
You are being very kind to want that for your friend, but honestly, it isn't a good idea. There are hundreds of dogs in shelters who belonged to some very well intentioned soul who bought them, but could no longer take care of them. Please reconsider.

No. A puppy is a new family member, and those parents have other reasons. It is cute for the birthday present, but leaves the entire family with 10 plus years of responsibility. It should be their decision to get the dog (if money were really the reason, they could get a great dog from the animal shelter). I got my niece a cat once and, guess what? I now have a cat (she had to give it back).

Giving a live animal is never a good idea. A dog is a very personal choice and she should pick out her own dog. Preparing for a puppy takes some time, thought and money and you can't know that your friend (or her parents) would be ready for a puppy with no notice.
Maybe if you talked to her parents first and they agreed, you could take your friend to pick out her own puppy.

This is never a good idea. Her parent's don't want to spend the money. Okay, so what happens when that puppy needs vaccinations? Becomes ill? Does your friend have the money? Who will be responsible for the expense??

A dog is a big responsibility. You must not force it on a family, because it might end up unwanted. If they can't afford to get the dog, they might not spend the money necessary to take care of it (vets, food, etc). Also, why not get one for free from a shelter? So my answer is that it is not a good idea, although it is cute.

Giving pets as gifts is oftena bad idea.... are you SURE she is ready for all the responsibility, cost, and time that the puppy will take? If she was planning on getting one soon anyway, then I guess it can't hurt. Make sure her parents are OK with it of course.
