The heart beats faster during exercise because the oxygen required by muscles is increased when they work. Oxygen feeds the muscle and also carries away lactic acid (what makes your muscles feel like they're 'burning' during exercise).

Strange things is... the healthier you get from doing exercise, the slower your heart rate will become. While the average humans resting heart rate may be between 60-70 bpm, an athelete can have a heart rate of between 48-50. This happens because exercise results in increased lung capacity and making the heart a more efficient and stronger pump.

Your heart rate increases to meet your body's demands. The basal metabolic rate is the situation that applies when the body is at rest. Anything you do, e.g. brisk walking, will show up as an increase in heart rate.
