Many things cause this. One of the biggest reasons is putting hair in a ponytail while it is still wet.As the hair drys it expands and the tension from the band or ponytail holder causes breakage. As well as,not using the proper conditioner and not having your hair trimmed before it breaks off.

your hair breaks of due to dryness to the hair shaft . You are using not the right products for your hair type and your are probably using gels or products with alchohol in it what i would do is go to a professional hairstylist get a couneltation with one of them talk about what hair type u got and use a treatment to restore ur dried up hair and get proper products for ur hair type

Basically blowdrying on high, using heat styling tools (i.e. flat iron) on high with no heat protection on your hair, wearing ponytails too tight, using elastics with the metal attachment, using cheap combs, not conditioning enough, using gels and hair sprays that contain alcohol, etc. If you want visit http://forum.blackhairmedia.com for more info.
