Hawai'i is not for the faint of heart - - - if you are not pulling in at least Two Grand a Month, if you are single, it is painful beyond belief. The ways that people cope with the price of things is to A) Be able to room with other people - - - minimalistic living, get use to having just a single room for you and be prepared to share tolet sink shower with others. B) Become a smart shopper, C) Prioritize what you really need. Actually O'ahu has got cheaper to live since the big box stores have come in But Housing prices will always be High - - - Good Luck....

Good luck with that! We live in Hawaii on a military base. We can afford it because we have base housing and have stores on base where things are cheaper. It is still expensive to do anything. When we looked for off base housing, for a two bedbroom, the price range began at 1700 per month. Even though we live here, we can't do all of the tourist attractions all the time. We are fortunate to have a lot on base to help us out with activities. Keep in mind, the housing that you get, it is small!! We have to drive at least 30 minutes to get to Honolulu and Waikiki and everything is expensive there! Gas is about the same for us from where we came from before here.

Don't pay attention to these party poopers. The truth of the fact is as long as you don't spend your money foolishly anybody can make it in Hawaii. I know, and am speaking from experience for 25sh years now working at fast food etc. I was even able to save up enough money to put myself through school and now have a better job. The problem is, is that everybody wants to live beyond their means and they can't budget their money properly.
As far as gas goes, don't by a car, that's the biggest waste of $ ever. Buy a bus pass for $40 a month. Take the money you save from that gas guzzling money eating car and put it in some good mutual funds. Search around for rent, I've never paid over $450 a month. Only buy food on sale etc...etc...etc...
Yea, you may not be living the high life at first, but after you've done all this sacrificing for a while, and in the meantime you are making money in the stock/bond market, you will be happier than mostly everybody else on this board.

For the average person it totally sucks because you would need to have at least 2 jobs for yourself or at least have another person living with you that has good amount of income coming in also. That or you can go indebt just trying to move there which what my cousin's are in at the moment from moving back and forth in the last 3 yrs that I known, from Washington State back to Hawai'i. I thought they was crazy to keep doing this and I know they not rich and I'm sure they got bills coming out of their buttocks. But hey anyways good luck if you do intend on moving to Hawai'i.

Moving there is not the problem. A plane ticket doesn't cost that much. Once you are there be prepared for $5.00 for a gallon of milk, $3.29 for gas not premium, $900 a month rent for a small studio etc....It is way too expensive.

It was much cheaper when I moved there at age 3. Actually I'm still here and it sux cuz I feel so poor. Everything goes to rent and gas. Gotta love those sunsets though, right.

just wait for about 6 years. Housing prices are slowly dropping for the most part though I wouldn't expect the cost of living to go down at all.
