a friend of mine at work recently asked me over the computer to hang out sometime, at work we joke a lot but he hasn't asked me out since. He said he'd like to go as friends but do you think he means more at all? I like him a lot and want to know how to let him know

I think he means more than friends, but he doesn't want to scare you off. If you like him, ask him out to lunch. If he later asks you to go out as friends, go out with him. No guy is going to say, "Would you like to go out as more than friends?"

I think that it won't be very difficult for you to let him know that you like him. You said that he already asked you out. Why don't you just remind him about that. You joke a lot, so just tell him (in a kind of joke) to have that promised coffee together. Don't rush in trying to express your feeling in the very first coffee you have together. Try to be yourself and natural and let him know that you an be a very good friend for him. Then if you go out together more than once he will begin to like you more and more. Time will make it for you. So be patient.
But, don't be too shy, tease him time after time...

Oh.. maybe he likes you but he is shy to tell you or to let you know.. If he asked you out, then go out with him.. in that way both of you can be really close and you will know more about him. Its nice to be on a getting to know stage.. Just continue being friends with him, its more fun then after sometime that you both know each other really well, you never know, soon he might tell you that he likes you..

He is probably testing the waters to see if you are interested. Just suggest you hook up after work on day and take it from there.

Keep it that way. If wants only your friendship, be sure not to cross the line. You may embarrass yourself if you do. Let it take its course naturally. If he too realises its more to it, then bang.

he needs encouragement.
he doesn't want to risk upsetting you by seeming to be a pest.
