First, they are convinced that they have a problem that they need to fix. They are convinced that no one can understand or help them with their problem except the cult. They are convinced that the answer that the cult gives them is the only answer which will work. Promises of happiness are given for those who will follow the cults ways. Fear is instilled by telling them that bad things will happen if they leave the cult. Sometimes they are instructed to find new members to increase the size of the cult.

Many cults and religions use these techniques to get members to join and stay with them. Interesting if you think about how many times the basic principles are used even in mainstream societies........

Sad to say, it satifies their needs.
It's what they want to do. What they want to believe in.
Many cults have immorality, drugs, leader worship, etc, that a follower chooses to live with.

A cult is ususally not registered or incorporated.

Christianity is a cult. It is more important to convert others than it is to have a good relationship with your God. Christianity believes they have the One True Faith. This is fanaticism, the same thing that make Muslims strap dynamite on themselves and die to kill Infidels. Christians pray for the End of the World. They gleefully anticipate the planet's destruction and the time when their God will torture most of the living beings on the planet. Christians worship a Hanged God. What Gallow's God is any good? Odin is a Gallow's god, and trusting them is always a gamble. Hanged God, fanatical devotion, praying for Earth's destruction, a Torturer God, Eternal Damnation, I have to say Christianity is a death cult intent upon global conquest, just like Islam. Is there any faith from the Middle East that is decent, peaceful, and devoted to spiritual development? What you call 'Occult' is actually closer to a true religion that fosters spiritual growth and individual maturity and responsibility. Pagans, like me, don't recognize Satan or give him any credit, like many Christians do. If I become a raging alcoholic, it's my fault, not Satan's. I take responsibility for myself and my actions. Can you say the same thing about Fundementalist Christians who claim any personality defect to be the work of 'demons'?

More details would probably be helpful. Which cult? I don't know. Any religion is a cult. Just some are bigger and more powerful than others.
