It is just a fashion statement. It doesn't mean that a woman is in love with another at all.
As far as the men are concerned, I have always heard that if a guy wears an earring in his right ear, then he is gay. If a man wears an earring in the left, again, a fashion statement or he just wants to be a badazz.

Firstly, gay does not mean a man is inlove with another man. Gay actually means HAPPY and it is referred to queer guys because they are happy with the way they are. Secondly, if used to describe queer men it cannot be used for woman as that is Lesbian. Finally, one earing in you ear does not imply in any way that you are a lesbian it depends entirely on the person wearing it. It might be for fashionable reasons, rebelliousness from the usual way of doing it or just plainly because they couldn't find the other earing!

some girls only wear one earing because they are trying way too hard to be cool and probably have a low self esteem and are just looking to get laid all the time... it's very tragic

actually, it's for style. you can't question a person's sexual preference with just looking at how she wears her earings.
