I have an 84 year old aunt that I would trust with any country. She's got more wisdom and common sense than anyone I know. I know a few 19 year olds who would do a creditable job of running a country. I have a 55 year old brother in law I wouldn't trust to run to the corner and buy me a paper.
Age shouldn't be the determining factor in running a country. I wouldn't mind seeing every candidate be subjected to I.Q. tests and exams to determine their honesty and integrity though.

No - if there were to be an age limit 55 is too low. Having a lower age limit makes sense as no-one under 35 has the experience to be president, but a lot of older people are well qualified. A law such as you propose would have barred Winston Churchill (age 65) from becoming prime minister in WW2.

What would be the point of limiting the age to 55 years? You already have to be at least 35 to run--so wouldn't that make it rather restrictive? John McCain is free to run, but that doesn't mean he will be elected--if people think he is too old they shouldn't vote for him. Since when is 55 too old? You must be very, very young.

I can already see that Sen. McCain's age and health are going to be huge issues. CNN had something on yesterday that had his age, if elected, down to the day. (Something like... 72 years, 6 months and 23 days, making him the oldest man ever to be elected President.) How ridiculous. His platform, and his proposed solutions to the big issues of the day, should be what the media, and voters, are focused on, rather than his age. On the other end of the spectrum, John F. Kennedy's youth made some voters leery of him. Equally ridiculous. I predict that Sen. McCain will handle this with his usual bluntness--one of the things I like about him. (And I'm a lifelong Dem!)
