It's bad at first.. during the first month of initial chemotherapy which its called "induction to remission phase" they give the patient intense doses of medicines, all kind of chemotherapy agents, this is the stage where people get so tired they cannot even walk and they lose all their hair. Most of the people achieve remission after one month of induction therapy and then they start the consolidation, which is not so bad as the induction, after a couple of weeks after completing the consolidation phase, they get in the maintenance phase, which is easier to handle.. basically you go to get chemotherapy every month so your body have 4 weeks to recover from the last chemo before getting a new one. In the maintenance phase is where patients begin to recover from the very intense first phase.. so.. answering to your question, I have to say that its bad at first, but as the time goes on, it becomes easier to handle. Plus leukemia has a very high curation rate..keep your hopes up, your cousin will be just fine, my son was diagnosed with leukemia 2 years ago and next September 6th he will have his last chemotherapy and he is doing great!! (if you need to ask any question or I can help you in any way, please don't hesitate contacting me)

There are different kinds of leukemia. The answer would depend on what kind your cousin has. Some are treatable with chemotherapy. Some are resistant and the person needs a bone marrow transplant. I could tell you a lot more if I knew what your cousin has.

Good luck to your cousin.

Hopefully, they caught it early. It varies in everyone, and there are many different forms of Leukemia. Try the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. There's a ton of info there, and a bulletin board where you can talk with others.

Best wishes to you & your cousin.
