The other day we got home and there was blood all over my dogs bed. I was so worried he was bleeding but couldn't find the cause. Today i noticed he loves to bury treats (eg bones, pig hocks, etc) and rather than using his paws to cover the treat with dirt he uses his nose. Once he's covered the treat with dirt he continues using his nose to smooth the dirt over.

I've never seen a dog use his nose to do this. He now has cuts on his nose and i'm worried if he continues doing this he will really hurt himself. How can i teach him to not use his nose??

Teach him how to use a shovel?

That's how dogs do it...they don't have opposable thumbs.

What's he cutting his nose on...rocks? Sticks? Can you remove them from the area he uses? Can you CREATE a stick/rock-free area for him to use? It is his NATURE to do what he's doing...and he ENJOYS it.

Let him be a dog. It's no big deal to get a wet rag to wipe his nose. I'm sure he's happy as anything going through the whole deal of digging, burrying, and jealously guarding. Grant him that doggy-happiness. See if you can PROVIDE a safer environment for him to do it in...a sand or hay pile...then teach him to use THAT.

If your dog is outside unsupervised that's what he will do.
