Many Times and for various reasons. Usually, because the government or leaders were afraid of it!

When the papacy of the Roman pontifices rose into power which later strengthened its socio-political and religious stand as the universal church (Ecclesia Catholicae), they were blinded by the power and glory that the world was paying them, the megalomania of the popes began. They used their influence and power to let the people of the Roman Empire convert to it. Alas, due to their greed of power, they totally banned the people from reading the Holy Scriptures because they do not want the defects of the said congregation be EXPOSED. As the years, even centuries passed by, their wickedness still never declined. They even burnt people alive from every regions in Europe under the papacy of Rome that would be caught possesing a Bible, and harshly, they were burnt alive with their Bible. Specifically in the Iberian Peninsula (which includes Spain and Portugal), Italy, France, Germany, and etc. Due to the Bible truths that could potentially expose the wickedness, defects, and Scriptural twisting done by the clergy of the Catholic Church and its pagan- rooted rituals, it gave birth to the German, French, and Spanish inquisition. Because of their strict discouraging of the people from reading it, they even translated the entire Scripture from Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek into the dead and clergical language which is the Latin which the lower kind of people never knew how to speak. But fortunately, there was people later that became interested in the contents of the Bible as if they were digging a hidden treasure, they succesfully rendered the original tongues of the Bible into their native languages and spread throughout the world, but once again they were hindered by the members of the Vatican. But sad to say, they were impotent enough to stop the divine Word of Jehovah the Sovereign Lord from spreading its good news to mankind.(2 Timothy 3:16-17)

As it has been suggested, the Bible is banned in most Arab countries since it goes against their Muslim beliefs and doctrines. It is also banned in Communist countries such as Russia [then] and China [now] since their governments propagate Atheism, or rather, they don't believe in any gods or religions.

It is common knowledge that Christians--overseas workers-- and missionaries take great personal risk when they go to such countries, bringing their bibles with them.

On the other hand, until only recently, the Roman Catholic Church used to PROHIBIT or ban the faithful laity [its members] from reading the Bible! True. It was mostly due to fear of their misinterpreting it, as what had occurred in 16th century when Protestantism/Great Reformation began. It is not surprising that even today most Catholics hardly know--or have read--the Bible in its ENTIRETY since the Church DOES NOT have any Bible study at all.

Peace be with you!

To say it's the best selling book is any insult. For LONG periods of time it was the only book. In many cases other books were burned by ignorant people. That is why works like the Roman doctor Gaylon's book of work was largely lost as with many other books with knowledge and wisdom. We can thank all you dip stick Christians for plunging Europe into the dark age.

Banned? What do you speak of?

The Holy Bible is banned in a number of Muslim countries. Occasionally, I have heard of Bible burning parties in America.

Every freethinker bookstore I ever went into even had a Holy Bible.

In North America, I suspect it is rarely banned. If it was banned somewhere...no fear... the ACLU would be all over that situation trying to un-ban it.
