It's like a whopper with fries and a coke. It just goes together.
Educate yourself on cheeses and wines and you will be the man with the ladies.
If you don't remember which goes with what, make a gay man your best friend, so he can help you out in a cruntch.

I suggest you to buy a decent wine, not too cheap say around $10-15 (e.g. Ravenswood Zinfandel). This wine has a powerful taste. Take a zip (without eating cheese) and taste the wine. Then eat some cheese, bread. Taste again. You will notice the taste changes and goes very well together. Go to a proper cheeseshop and ask the shopkeeper for appropriate cheeses going along with zinfandel.
Good tasting!

There is a reason more complex than the previous answers. The flavonoids play on each other, some better than others. You could say that the fat in some cheeses counter the acidity in some wines creating flavors you wouldnt experience eating or drinking by themselves. Another example could be a 10 year port (slightly sweet) paired with a cured manchego cheese (salty and slightly acidic) which is a match made in heaven.

The combination of something savory with wine tends to enhance the complex flavours and bouquet of the wine, thus making it more enjoyable. There is a complementary effect on the taste of the cheese, too.
It is good to eat whilst drinking wine, anyway.

Yes, the things we eat and drink affect the way the wine tastes to us. A recent study was done at UC Davis on this topic by a classmate of mine. According to her sensory studies, cheese does not enhance wine flavor.

The cheese has a rich flavor and the wine is the one that levels it out to where you can't taste the alcohol.

One word - France.
The French are known for their love for cheese - and for their love for wine. Both in a great variety, and fine, and expensive - the consumption of each becomes a plasure to the senses. Don't know particular habits, but the combination of cheese and wine may come from there too, as a tradition.

the tannin in a good red wine combines nicely with the protein and fat in a good cheese, just need a good cracker to grind it up with.
not just the French wines..., our California wine and cheese is superior to theirs, although they might deny it till the end of the world.
they are wrong!
