It's the standard tournament format you see on tv. The single means one person playing their own ball. A two ball would mean a team of two against other teams of two. A twosome would mean two people playing one ball verus other twosomes. A lot of people get that one wrong

If you go to the golf course as a SINGLE(being by yourself to golf) they will pair you up with 3 other people if they are busy to make a foresome, most all courses play 4 at a time when they are busy, sometimes 5 if they want to piss everyone off.They will announce you as "SMITH single with the JONES threesome. Smith being you, and Jones the other players . If you call on the phone to the pro shop they will ask you how many players you have in your group, they will say are you a foresome, threesome or single to make the tee-time, hope this helps.

Single match = 2 players + 2 caddies + 1 umpire
Single round = 1 players.

single match is one player against another, so there will be two playing usually, but in some tournaments they have them in threes or fours, all playing for themselves.
