I teach people to cook, I find the following helps:
- Use fresh onions, old ones seem to be worse.
- Breath in and out of your mouth as vapours heading towards your face are bought in and out of your mouth rather thanup to your eye area.
- Learn to cut properly, if you are cutting with your fingers back and using the back of the fingers on your left hand as a guide for your knife it is possible to dice or slice an onion without looking, DON'T TRY THIS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. I've been cooking proffesionally for 22 years.
- Get someone else to do it, the joy's of being a head chef!

leave the root part on. peel skin down to the base and cut onion as desired so for example cut down onion towards the root and then turn onion oposite direction keeping all onion intact. then slice from the top and quickly discard the root.

Try to light a candle near the place where you are cutting the onions. It will burn the vapours of onion juice which are released when cutting the onion thus stopping them to enter into your eyes. <_*

Try any or all of the following, depending on how many you have to cut, or how desperate you are:

Cut under running water, or rinse as you peel them
Refrigerate for half an hour before cutting/chopping
Breathe through your mouth as much as possible
Hold a matchstick or toothpick in your mouth (seems to help you breathe through your mouth)
Burn a candle (especially a nice-scented one), nearby, or incense
Open a nearby window, or use your kitchen exhaust fan

Eyeglasses never did much good for me, but a few people I know swear that SWIM GOGGLES actually work.

Good luck!

You can wear a pair of goggles, clear swimming goggles also help.

When you cut onions, you release fumes, that cause irritation in the eyes, so anything that can cover the eyes completely and prevent the fumes from reaching your eyes should prevent you from tearing/crying while you cut your onions.
