I cant get a letter from my employer cos i'm self employed! Its my own car but rented and classed as a company car as its used purely for business. I dont want to ring companies cos they want all your details first to send you junk mail before they'll answer a simple question

Talk to an insurance agent. A letter from your employer or their insurance company may work.

Generally no it doesnt but with a letter from a senior person at your company some insurers will allow a discount, such as AXA, the letter needs to say " We confirm that Mr X has been driving a company car for the past 4 years and during that time he has nad no claims or accidents. The use of the company car has now ceased.

The last sentence is important

Some Insurance Companies will accept you good driving record with a company car, you will need a letter from your employers saying how long you have been driving and that you have had no claims in that time.

If you personally have not had any accidents, it wouldn't matter what car you were driving for the past 4 years. You have none to report, and shouldn't need a letter proving you've been claim free. But you really should call around.

It depends on the insurance company.

Your company car scheme manager should be able to provide details of you company car usage for insurance purposes.
