Your dog may appear thin compared to ones you see online but take into consideration the type of 'haircut' she has. If you can easily feel your dogs ribs without pushing in, then she is fine. If her ribs are clearly visible then she needs to put on some weight. Looking down on your dog, she should have a natural waistline behind her ribs. BUT if you think your dog needs to put on a little weight (and I caution you to check with your vet first since even a little bit of extra weight can be VERY detrimental to a dog) then you can try adding some canned food to her dry which is typically more fat laden then dry OR when I get a malnourished dog into rescue, I buy a tube of Nutrical and give about a teaspoon of that at mealtime. it's packed full of nutrition and high calories for dogs to help them gain weight safely and quickly.

What are you feeding your dog? Just cause you're feeding it a lot of food does NOT mean that your dog is absorbing it. It could be eating all that food and just pooping it out. Also canned food will give your dog runny stool and consists mostly of water. Exercise will help your dog gain weight- muscle weighs more than fat, also depending on its breed it may not gain weight... If you're really worried contact a vet and ask about food, potential vitamins your dog may need, and proper exercise to help increase weight.

Perhaps she is not completely digesting her food. If her food has corn in it, or beet pulp, it will not fully digest, and small dogs need all the nutrition their small tummies can get out of the small amount they eat..give her premium dog food, such as Canidae (pretty fattening), Innova, Wellness, Wysong, or Solid Gold....she should begin to fill out in no time..If she doesn't seem to be eating enough, add a small spoon of tinned food on top, as an appetizer, such as Mighty Dog, or Cesar's.

"Satin Ball" recipe for dogs who won't eat
This recipe is for dogs who desperately need calories and need to put on weight, but who have no appetite. It sounds yucky, but when these are done they are really appealing, even to me.
In my experience, this is a kind of "last resort and hope" food that many sick dogs will eat.
Mix all ingredients (like meatballs). I shape them like thick hamburgers rather than balls because they store easier in the freezer and thaw faster. Freeze in serving portion size. Nothing is cooked -- all ingredients are uncooked RAW and "Satin Balls" are served raw.

This recipe for Little Dogs (1/10 of full recipe) would be a good test to see if your dog will eat them before you make the substantial investment in ingredients of the half or full size recipe. See Notes below about the Total cereal, oats, wheat germ and vegetable oil.

Satin Balls for Little Dogs -- or to try out recipe on your dog to see if he will eat it.

1 lb cheap hamburger (for high fat %)
1 and 1/3 cups Total cereal
1 and 1/2 cups uncooked oatmeal
1 raw egg
6 Tablespoons wheat germ
1 package Knox unflavored gelatin
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
2 Tablespoons unsulphered molasses
Pinch of salt
