1. They become "dated" the moment the better models come out.
2. They become "outdated" when the majority of people have better ones.
3. Think about a 3 year period today, then outdated.

There is a new techology on the horizon called SED (stimulated emission display) which is supposed to blow away everything else (LCD, plasma). It is still in development, and how good it really is remains to be seen. Until that technology proves itself and gets low enough in cost to compete (I would guess 5 to 10 years), LCD, plasma, and DLP will be the only choices.

Plasmas shouldnt last but another 5 or 10 years due to their short tube lifspan

TV technology doesn't change as fast as computer tech.
So i guess, it would be around 10 years. By that time, your LCD/Plastma TV would be old and would be time to buy and change to a new television anyway.

They will probably not be outdated anytime soon. Too much money have been invested by the electronics corporations. However, their popularity may decline as newer, even more technologically advanced designs come out.
