Why do ultra-orthodox people dress and act in such unorthodox ways?

Using the sub-culture of youth as an example, there are the:

1) Goths - wear mostly dark clothing, make-up and some acquire bats, vampires and other dark-side items.
2) Preps - wear the latest stylish clothes and some indulge in elitism.
3) Punks - wear flamboyant colors and often defy authority
4) Skateboarders - wear skater gear and vans/skater shoes and some listen to Industrial music
5) Gangstas - wear baggy clothing and listen to rap music

Each group wears the clothing and often act the roles that define their sub-culture. It's a way of belonging.

Their dress doesn't seem unorthodox to them; they probably feel it's modest.
If frums don't complain about the way I look, I won't complain about how the frums look. It's a bit shallow to judge people on the basis of fashion.

what appears to be ultra-unorthodoxy today set as orthodoxed about a thousand years ago. Holding to the original traditions in sort of ingrained. Especially since its in their name.

To set themselves apart from the rest of the world.
The interesting thing to me is that in their setting apart - they become slaves to their own rules- that in turn makes their simple faith not just simple- but also conditional on external appearences. They unintentionally get tangled in their own dogma.

Somehow they feel like in their appearence they are worthy of the salvation that defines their works. When all along they have missed the part about ....Not by works- but by faith alone we are saved.
