I have a chihuahua. She goes out and sunbathes whenever she can. Its actually kinda cute.

Depending on the breed of dog would determine my answer :D Some dogs, the really furry ones and some white ones, actually have fur that is designed to keep them cool and shaving them actually prevents them from staying cool; weird huh? But my little guys like to soak up the sun on the patio too. I think they like the outdoors, the sights, the odors and the feel of the wind and fresh air. When they get too warm, they let me know and come back inside to cool off :)

Maybe they are like us...not all people like to sunbathe. I personally could lay in the sun for hours, and the rest of my family can't stand the heat unless they are in the water, and that includes my dog.

Your dog probabally is over heated. But if your doggie gets to cold he/she will want to lay in a warm place. Dogs do best in a medium temp enviorment!

Most dogs intuitively know a little sun is needed. And will naturally seek it when available.

I think they need sun to make vitamin C (or D?). I know there is some vitamin a dog needs the sun to make or synthesize.

Maybe because they are closer to nature and they need the "real" air. We don't pay attention, but air conditioning is not healthy, although it's comfortable. Animals feel that and they avoid what does not feel good for them.

So they have something else to look at.
They can't get up when they're bored and go somewhere like you do when you're bored.It's nice to have a change of scenery evan tho their worlds are so small.

Dogs don't like the heat but they do like the wind and all the smells of the outdoors.

My chihuahuas would rather be out in the sun. They get cold very easily.
