if anyone knows about boxing, steven forbes is a professional boxer. He is a former world welterweight champion. I though this show was suppose to be about giving new talent a shot at the bigtime? if anyone can shed some light on this, please do so.

I think Forbes was a former super featherweight champion - he was having problems making the weight and I think this is a new venture for him being in the welterweight division - Steve is a guy they chose so he can give some cred to The Contender's other fighters - if a bunch of nobodies all beat each other up, would you really care who won? This guy gives the boxing public an idea of the talent that is actually performing on the show -

Steve Forbes was never a welterweight champion, but was a former IBF super-featherweight champion from 2000-2002 when he lost the title.

A handful of years ago, back in 2002, Forbes lost that title on the scales before a title defense against David Santos after a year off from the game. Forbes couldn't make the 130-lb limit and since then has been kinda on the outskirts as far as a promotional enity worth representing. Forbes used to fight on ESPN and Fox Sports Net, but after losing the title out of the ring, he seemed to go into a downward spiral. He lost his management team and never had a quality game plan.

Since 2002, Forbes has been semi-inactive and has moved away from 130 after losing a decision to Yodsanan Sor Nanthachai for the WBA super-featherweight title in late 2004. In that fight, it was clear he had no business draining himself to make the weight class any longer.

His last 5-6 bouts were at welterweight, where he took on some medicore opponents at best.

A fighter of Forbes' talent was stuck in the wrong weight class at a weight he couldn't make and was all but finished on the big stage. 'The Contender' show will have given him a chance to shine and although he isn't a new fighter, he is a fighter worthy of this chance.

Fighters like Mike Stewart, Ebo Elder and most of the others aren't new fighters to boxing and I think if 'The Contender' showcased a bunch of guys that were 'new talent', I dont think the show would be as successful.

Forbes is a guy that I believe could win a world title at junior welterweight after the show is done and he wins this thing on September 26th.

Good point. I think it's to get him back in the "limelight". These guys are all hoping that the television exposure will make them more attractive to promoters and help them get better fights and bigger purses.

I guess his boxing career is on the skids.
