My older child used a fork/spoon very quickly - by the time he was two he had it down pat. My second one took a little longer. My third usually doesn't use one unless I remind him!!! (And he is 6) Actually - he did not hold a pen/pencil right until He went to pre-school.

Some Children do not use it correctly until they go to school and watch/follow others to learn how to grasp pencils/pens etc.. However this is a little late. They should basically have it down pat before this - BUT Everyone is different! If they have been repeatedly shown how to use it - They should kind of have the idea of it - by around 3-4 years old at the most. If you are concerned about developmental delays - ask your doctor or you can even research - there is a state agency (free) that can evaluate his/her development. They will ask questions over the phone first to see if there are any reasons to further evaluate/test the child before they come to your house. If there are no other problems in any other areas - don't be concerned - everyone starts walking at different times/is potty trained at different ages, etc... you can just have a willful child that will do it when they want to - not when you want them to! Relax ....Smaller children -smaller problems; bigger children - bigger problems.

My son is 2 and he does ok with a fork and spoon, but will get frusrated and put it down and start using his fingers. I was a nanny for a girl. She was 3 when I started and turned 4 not too long after and she did really well with a fork.

Well, my daughter used hers, correctly, by the time she was a little over one. She was always a fast learner, though. How old is your toddler?

My son started using the utensils correctly about 2. He had been using them on a daily basis for about 3-6 months and finally it just "clicked"

We just enjoyed watching him try and got pics of him trying and trying. Enjoy their innocence.
