digital zoom is a fake zoom made to fool the consumers of digital camera that the camera can take much further than the lens can. in fact, digital zoom only zooms into a digital file and roughly estimates what is in the picture and add the picture using mathematical calculations to produce ugly images.
optical zoom is a physical zoom of the lens that is able to seemingly bring objects far away nearer to the camera. this has very little effect on the picture quality since the amount of information present is as real as it gets. this is the best way to go for zooming.
zoom lens is the lens that is capable of changing its focal length. an example would be something like 35mm-150mm. initially, most of the lenses that was used before the invention of zoom lenses are prime lenses, meaning the only have a single focal length such as, 35mm or 50mm. zoom lenses are able to get a wide angle shot and narrower angle shot (further away) all in one lens.

Digital zoom is a lower quality zoom, its where a micro computer inside the camera simply creates a zoom, by lowering the resolution, and cropping the frame.
Optical zoom is where the lens actually changes length... in most newer cameras, this is a mechanism that runs a motor and slides the lens length longer to create a true zoom. On manual type zoom lenses, you would have to manually lengthen the zoom lens. Longer lens, more zoom for optical zoom. With digital, the computer just 'fakes' a zoom.

digital zoom is not really a zoom. It just means that the electronics take a subset of the digital image, and enlarge it, keeping the same number of pixels. So you lose on the detail and don't really see anything more.
optical zoom means you have a lens that allows you to narrow down to a small detail of the scene you are phtographing, say the head of a lion. You do actually get more detail
hope this helps

digital zoom is a computer "fake" of zoom. it crops the pic and lowers the resolution to obtain this... with optical zoom, 3 glass lenses are moved closer or farther apart to obtain true zoom. a zoom lens is a camera lens that has zoom ability

Optical zoom is just that...the capability of the lens at full resolution. Digital zoom is the camera "cropping" the shot for the purpose of magnification of the image. It's not any less resolution, just magnifying and using less of the image when it records it
