Technically, it's usually a rose color (in the red family). However, it is invariably cheap wine and can even look a bit like diluted brandy. A red or rose is used to emphasize the blood of Christ.

Catholics use either kind.
The wine for the eucharistic celebration must be from the fruit of the grapevine (cf. Lk 22:18), natural, and unadulterated, that is, without admixture of extraneous substances.
