Technically, it's usually a rose color (in the red family). However, it is invariably cheap wine and can even look a bit like diluted brandy. A red or rose is used to emphasize the blood of Christ.

Red...goes with the whole idea that it's Christ's blood. Which is more than slightly gross, if you think about it.
