Someone broke into my 98 Maxima through side window right in front of my apartment. We didn't hear the alarm sound. Does Maxima come with these kind of alarms or does it need to be turned on?

the alarm that a 1998 nissan maxima has (if equipped) is activated / deactivated upon locking / unlocking the vehicle either by turning the key in the ignition or using the keyless entry.
the alarm will sound when a door is opened after vehicle has been armed (locked). so, if the person who broke intop car did not reach in and unlock the door and then open it, your alarm will not sound.
*side note: when the alarm is activated, it cuts the ignition so the vehicle can not be started. to reset the ignition, you must turn the key in one of the doors or use the keyless remote to unlock the vehicle.

EIther your alarm doesnt work or the alarm isn't the type to trigger on touch. A 98 Maxima with stock alarm probably isnt that advanced, most alarms are triggered by vibrations, tilting of the car (to prevent unauthorized towing), touching the car, the opening or closing of special switches (e.g. door contacts), sensing small but rapid changes in battery voltage (which might indicate an interior light going on, or the ignition circuit being activated), or using volumetric sensors such as ultrasound or infrared.

Car alarms are usually on automatically. You dont have to turn them on. All you have to do is lock the car and the alarm should be enabled. Most of the higher end maxima models have alarm built in. The basic versions requires the buyer to order the alarm separate. (if he or she wants it)

Depends on what sort of alarm you have. Generally alarms are activated when a door is opened. If they didn't open the door this maybe why it didn't sound.

most factory alarm system dont have glass sensor, they only sound the horn when the door is open without using the key or the keyless remote theres nothing to turn on

well u can go look for the switch r a button on the bottom left from the steering wheel n if it don't exist u don't got an alarm..

contact Nissan and find out if there was an alarm on your model car. if it was and it didnt work, tell them your situation then contact the dealer to get it fixed--
make sure you save ALL communications with Nissan AND the dealer in case there is legal issues that need to be dealt with
