It depends on how you look at it. Bipolar 1 is when you have more mania than depression. and when you're up you are REALLY up. When you're down your down.
Bipolar 2 people have more of the depression and it's severe depression. So when you up you're up but when you're down you are REALLY down. They are just vise-versa. I have bipolar 2, and personally I would rather have 1 if if had to choose.

I think the difference is in the cycling - how long the ups and downs last. In bipolar 1, you have 5 to 7 episodes during your life, whereas in bipolar 2, it is rapid cycling. At least in 1, you can sort of get used to it? whereas in 2, you can be on a mountain and fall off the cliff in a day's time. I wouldn't want to have either one of them, but if I had to chose, I guess I'd chose bipolar 1. They're both debilitating.

Bipolar I is the more severe because it has 3 components: manic, mixed episodes (where rapid cycyling of mania and depression occur), and depressive episodes. Mania is more often present and can result in self-harm or harm of others. The depressive phase can lead to suicide.
In Bipolar II, the episodes are less severe. Often it is harder to detect. These episodes are known as hyomanic.
Then there is Bipolar III which is usually a result of medication to treat depression. When the medication doesn't work properly, it can lead to a manic episode.
If you suspect you or someone close to you is bipolar, it would be good to consult your doctor for an initial diagnosis. Then that doctor can refer you to a psychiatrist for medication and treatment options.

there are actually 3 kinds of bipolar and many various within those classifications, so there is really no way to say which one is the worse, just make the best of the one you have

I truthfully didn't know there were two different kinds. My doctor thought I was bipolar, but after taking more then 5 different meds that didn't work...I told her that I was sure I didn't and that I wanted her to treat my anxiety and not anything else. Who told you there was more then one kind? I have never heard of that.

The severity is not dependent of the type but on the severity of the symptoms. Someone with severve symtpoms of either type is at risk.
