Last time the world was left to its own devices, WWII happened. Other countries are unwilling or unable to do what the US does, and if America were to bring all her Sons and Daughters home, anarchy would soon follow.
America is in many countries right now to help keep the peace in the region, they are also there at the request of those nations. Korea for one. Europe for the entire Cold War Era. These countries governments understand the importance of American Military presence in their countries and how it relates to its future, how it relates to keeping other countries from invading or threatening countries with American troops in them.
Economically, American troops in the different regions keep money and goods flowing without piracy. In the Western Indian Ocean, Piracy has become a problem. US Naval power has been brought to bear and piracy is slowly disappearing allowing free trade to continue.
Without American troops other countries would move to fill the power void. Venezuela, Iran... War would ravage most of the Third World, and they would all cry for American Involvement.

I'd like to think that it would be all beer and Skittles, but history teaches a different lesson. We tried the isolationist route in the years leading up to WW2. I am convinced that we are better off being proactive and fighting our enemies abroad when they 1st become aggressive than waiting for a huge force to show up on our borders and then have to fight a war among our own homes. Appeasement nearly cost the world a free Europe and Asia, and the German / Japanese led armies would have invaded American soil if we had not done what we did. ( Nuclear weapons might have staved things off until THEY developed them.)
Now in the 21st century there is a new fascist movement that is just as dangerous. Radical Islam will have to be dealt with. I wish it was not by force of arms, but I am convinced it will be. We cannot appease them, they want to destroy us and our way of life. There is not going to be any "live and let live" to it. We have the choice of where now, but if we withdraw, then that choice will be made by others who don't have our best interest at heart. As far as the UN, what a joke. Those guys could'nt referee a snowball fight, much less a war. I am not wholly convinced that Iran was the best place to start, but there we are. We are gonna have to fight. It's the nature of the world we live in, and our enemies.

A person would just have to open a history book to see what would happen. After World War I the internation community formed the League of Nations. At the time the United States did want to be involved with international politics and did not join. One of the results of that acation was the dissolution of the League of Nations and World War 2. Isolationism has never been a smart policy.

This policy (isolation) has never worked in the past and there is no reason to think that in the modern world it wouldn't be even less successful.
Even our economy is a world economy now. It is difficult if not impossible not to directly interact with the rest of the world constantly.
For instance, an atomic war anywhere in the world could have devastating effects on this country - even if we weren't involved in any way whatsoever.
And could we possible stand by and do nothing if one of our allies was attacked by a united group of fascist countries?
Unfortunately, as a super power, and, more importantly, as a free and Democratic country, we have obligations that we have to fulfill.

If we left every country where we are now, there would be genocide on a scale as the world has never seen. Terrorists and thug dictators would go wild. Communists would kill everyone who disagrees with them. Sectarian violence would go off the scale.
These homegrown idiots (Democrats) who blame America for all the world's problems are absolute alpha-hotels. America protects the world. We are the only country that can.
The UN is a joke. Period. It's composed of 75% thugs and dictators who kill their political opposition. The UN is about nothing if it's not about crippling our military and our economy. It should be thrown out of this country tomorrow.

Not a realistic possibility, for the world or for the US. The US is the most benevolent Superpower ever to exist to date, and no one waiting in line plans on adopting the "benevolent" part.
US policies have been and are foolish at times, and naive, but wait until some one else rises to the top, especially China.
If the US pulled back to it's borders, others would be bumping into each other to fill the gap, with their own brand of power.
The US would be strangled, (like lots of countries would like to see), and weaker nations around the world would be subjugated by the new bully, TOTALLY, not just interfered with like the US does.
Besides, if we do decide to pull back inside our borders, all our BILLIONS & BILLIONS & BILLIONS of $$$$$ in aid come home with us. No more Hurricane, earthquake, tsunami, epidemic, agricultural, dvelopmental, humanitarian, relief and aid to anyone. Let them go crawling to the Chinese or the Russians for help.

Some countries would fall apart without us
Some citizens would hate us for leaving them
Some citizens would rejoice at beating the evil Americans
Too many options to review.
The UN can't police anyone. The UN is great and gets countries together to talk but I don't think they can "really" do anything.
The US and Russia have over 90% of all nukes. I asked a question earlier about nukes and everyone reminded me about the suitcase bomb. Yeah, that would be our biggest threat. Other smaller nations would be a risk for sure

Chaos....possibly.
Aggressive nations would better able to take over other nations without having to worry about being defended.
Most of the world sees the U.S. as a police officer to come in and take care of problems that exist.
Of course there are a very few that think otherwise and would become an isolationist country.
That would never work. And dangerous.
Burying our heads is just repeating history.

There would continue to be mass killings in iraq and afghanistan without us being there to help. There is no way the UN could police the world, how can they when they rely on France to be its muscle. I dont like the fact that we have to help the entire world, but it seems that we are the only ones who can do it. We need to do it. The world seems to hate us, but they need us.
