I am of Cherokee and cusaba descent. It is not so easy. I have a Cherokee/Delaware site. The Cherokee on this site are in Oklahoma and have been for 200 years. Not all Cherokee went west during the trail of tears.

Your first step is to contact as many surviving family members as you can -- the older the better -- and gather as much information as they can give you. Then check with your department of Indian affairs, and see what resources they make available. Trying to trace Native ancestors is particularily difficult because the Indian people did not keep written records. When the US government took over the Indian affairs, they made copious lists, but if the clerk writing down the names didn't know how to spell what he heard, he often just made up a name and wrote that down, just as immigration officers often re-named non-english speaking immigrants when they came to the United States.
The federal archives should have some records that you can access, and these may lead you to others.
It's a fascinating search, but it can be very frustrating. Just keep going, and use your imagination. Information turns up in the darndest places!
Good luck.

A lot of native tribes (especially the five civilized of which the cherokee are one) kept records and actually still do through role numbers. You should be able to talk to someone from the Cherokee nation for some help on how to research this. Find out who your tribe representatives are.
