My husband has a cat that likes to pee wherever she wants. She has clean litter but still pees everywhere. Getting rid of her is not an option (she's a member of our family,) I don't know what to do. THis is driving me nuts, I'm sick of cleaning the carpets!! (Putting her outside's not an option... ) I hate the smell of cat pee!

I believe she pees everywhere because the person who had her when she was a kitten wasn't very clean...

Cats will sometimes use urination as a control tool.
She might be doing this. If so & you're not willing to do whatever it takes, she wins! (*When she does it...show distaste, put her outside & don't let her back in for awhile. When she wants to come in, pick her up, carry her to the spot, put her face close enough for her to smell & know why you're unhappy, then uncerimoniously put her back out.) Please... never 'rub their nose in it! It's not punishment... it's just letting them know wy you are unhappy.
I'm usually pretty good w/ stuff like this, & if it were a male, I'd say it was spraying. But.... a female? Maybe is she's really old? If so, it's terminal (w/ be this way till she dies.)

OK, first things first. Kitty needs a trip to the vet to rule out any possible medical issues. I don't care how "unclean" her surroundings were before, cats are usually neat creatures. You MUST rule out any medical issues before treating this as behavioral. While at the vet, and after s/he has ruled out any medical problems, ask the vet for advice on how to treat the undesired behavior.

As for cleaning the carpets, use an enzyme cleaner to clean them and the smell will go away. Personally, I use the one that bissel has out for their steam cleaners. I also use a spray called Out! For cat marking and urine. Despite all your cleaning, the smell may still be there if you don't use the enzyme cleaners. Urine smell is very hard to remove from carpets.

Also, as an afterthought, did you put new carpeting in? If so, it is said that new carpeting smells like cat urine to cats, and they will sometimes use it as their bathroom. It would be best to clean them with enzyme cleaners if that is the case.

Went through the same problem with our cat recently. We put him in a large dog kennel with his blanket, water/food bowl and litter box. We kept him in there for a few weeks with time out to socialize and get some loving. It broke him of this habit as cats will not sleep where they pee.

Petstores offer some chemical cleaners that claim to discourage this type of behaviour you can try. Personnally I'get a spray bottle that hold lemon juice and vinegar and everytime she starts to look like she is about to go potty spray the heck out of her. The smell of these two together cats hate and it irratates them slightly and leaves them a reminder. Now that the cat ran off for parts unknown find her and put her but in the litter box and praise her and pet her. She may not go the first few times but she will start to understand and want to do something that gets positive attention over the face full of stinging lemon vinegar.

My vet gave me this trick when we took in an abandoned kitten who was 5 weeks old and have never been taught to use a litter box. It took about 3 weeks but he learned although he had the weirdest habit of reaching out side the box to scrap and cover his mess rather then in the sand like he should and we never fixed that oddity in him.

Put her in the litter box and scrape her paws in the litter, that will tell her what it's for, If you see her sniffing around or showing any signs to go to the toilet pick her up and take her to the litter box, Make sure you clean the places where she went to the toilet as cats tend to sniff out the places she went and she will go in the same spot.
Try mixing vinegar with bicarbonate soda and that should get rid of the smell.
Remember to take her to the litter box and scrape her paws in the litter, that has worked for me every time..
You have to supervise her when she wants to go, when she dose go in the box make it a pleasant experience by giving her attention. That should work.
Good luck.
And never rub her nose in her mistakes that will only make her worse.

I believe you could toilet train your cat.
I've got a friend who kept 2 cats that used to be strays.
They'll always go and relieve themselves at a particular spot in the house. I've no idea how's that done, but its worth a look into.
