I have not myself, but I knew some kids in school that had a big brother or sister, and they changed for the better.

I was about 6 when my parents were divorced. My father was the type of man who liked using his son as a punching bag.
When I was a teen, I had a Big Brother named Ed. At first it was really great. He picked me up every second Saturday, and we would do all the stuff that I was missing in a home dominated by females (not that female dominated homes are bad). This went on for about a year, until his second son was born. Soon the visits were planned less frequently. Then he would promise to come at a certain time; I would wait on the front steps for hours and he would not show up. On my last visit to his place, his older son accidently hurt the younger one. Ed responded by taking the boy behind the garage and "spanking" him so hard and for so long that he was not able to get off the ground for quite awhile. While this beating was going on, he kept yelling " You're evil, you're going to hell, I'm going to beat the devil out of you". Memories of my father flooded back into my mind. I vowed that I would never see Ed again.
Now let me say this, I think Big Brothers is great. I have had the opportunity to volunteer with them many times over the years. I have met kids who's lives have been greatly blessed throught the relationships they have with their Brother. The only reason I did not become a Big Brother myself is that I was not able to commit the time I felt a Big Brother should be willing and able to commit(because of my job). Brothers and Sisters nowdays are screened much harder than they were when I was a teen. Criminal checks, employer checks and personal references are well researched.
I hope this helps.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters are great. But if you volunteer for it please remember that these children count on you and take your promises to heart. If you don't have the time then don't commit. A lot of times the children in these programs only have their big Brother or Big Sister to look up to. And when they are let down they really take it to heart. Personally I enjoy volunteering my time to the organization however with my job I won't be a Big Sister. I attend funcitons and read to classes go to High Schools and Middle Schools and stuff like that. I've done classes and workshops there and the children in the program know me and my situation. That works for me... but if you have the time to dedicate to one child that is a wonderful and great thing. If you don't have the time you can still do things to help out.
