it has nothing to do really with age. It would depend on his size and how active he is. I wouldnt really think that an 8 year old would need to count calories. I would just use common sense and make sure he eats lots of fresh fruit and veggies and keep sweets to a minimal and low fat meats. If you get him used to eatting good foods now it will be normal for him as he grows and wont end up being a junk food junkie. Make sure he is drinking plenty of water and getting plenty of excercise by playing like a normal 8 yr old and not sitting in front of a screen be it games , internet or tv. If he is running around you wont have to worry about his calorie intake.

Depends on a variety of factors -- and what kind of calories (good nutrition, or "junk") -- and how active he is (how many calories he is burning per day). This was an interesting site that has links to calculators for Body Mass Index, too.

It will be variable based on his height, weight, activity level, growth spurts, but generally if he is following his growth curve, then he is getting enough calories.

It's not a matter of age, but size and amount of activity. It's really something you should discuss with a pediatrician.
