I asked myself the same question more than once. I think that because our God (are you a Chrsitian?) is a God who will never control the freewill of man, nor will control the choices of man, He put that there. He walked in the garden of Eden with Adam and Eve everyday, right? That means He showed them His love for them, but also showed them that they didn't have no choice but to obey Him. They had a choice to obey Him or not, after He put the forbidden tree in the garden. Unfortunately so, Eve chose to disobey, rather than trust, in the Love that God showed them. And Adam was sweet-talked into it by his lover, Eve. It was because God will not control the freewill of man.

There were 2 trees in the Garden!
One the Tree of life, do you know who that was?
The other the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, Who do you think that was?

Is God not as guilty as the serpent? By putting the temptation within reach of Adam and Eve, his children? The serpent after all was only a tool, which God also placed in the Garden of Eden. A good parent keeps forbidden, dangerous things out of the reach of chilldren.
Oh yeah, I forgot, he was also the one who allowed his only begotten son to be tortured mercilessly until his death.

God put two critical trees in the Garden according to the Bible.
The tree of the Knowledge of Good & Evil, and the Tree of Life.
They were put there so that man would be able to exercise his free will concerning which tree to eat from.

Genesis or Bereshith in Hebrew (I hope I spelled it correctly) first -fruit, beginning deals with foundation principles of the incubation station called earth. Seed, spiritual energy, planted in any "Ete" will grow or germinate. An "Ete" is an earthen or carnal container. The carnal containers as described in the chapter are: mind, body, womb and earth. Since the human body and soil have so many compatible components--they are more closely related than monkeys to humans. So seed can be planted in any of the "etes."
Carnal knowledge is planted in the mind first. Some "etes" never existed before earth came into being. Prior to earth's existence, energy needed a carnal witness. Every time energy contacted matter, matter changed either positively or negatively. Energy had no way to manifest except through contact with matter. Humans have the unique distinction of receiving either positive or negative energy through the mind or body and we have options: to reject, receive or plant good and bad seed energy. That was not possible before earth came into being. That is why unlawful carnal knowledge is punishable by earthly law--Got the drift?

Without partaking of the tree of knowledge Adam and Eve would have remained in the garden. We wouldn't be here.
Adam fell that men might be. Men are that they may have joy.

As the creator of mankind, God has the wrote to set boundaries.
His one and only boundary was for Adam and Eve not to touch what was not theirs. This one simple "DO NOT" showed Adam and Eve that there was a higher authority. By not touching the fruit of that tree they acknowledged Gods sovereignty over them.
When they ate that fruit they took what did not belong to them and in effect were saying to their creator 'we no longer want to live by your standards but want to do things our own way'.
It truly was not a difficult thing for them to do but they used their God given choice of free will to reject Gods way.

Maybe God wanted to test Adam and Eve.
For a correct answer for this question, there is always a God in heaven for you to ask.

Mankind was given the option of just living with God himself in an extremely blessed situation. God gave them the capacities of freewill and self-determination and we chose to sin and make this world what it is.
