Get a HDMI cable for the dvd player and use the componet for the cable box. Some come with a cable, mine did i think.
Yes you can,, you can feed 1080i to a HDTV from several sources, hdmi or componant. but the set up from tha cable box for the best picture I've found is
TV type 16:9
ypbpr output: 1080i
4:3 override: off
This is for a Motorla DTC6412 box,, others should be similar.
What this is doing is allways driving the TV with a 1080i signal,, allthe conversion is done in the cable box,, from 480i standard tv to 1080i for the best possible picture.
And for the TV,, set it to Regular,, not stretch to fit.
for more info, this is what I posted to another asker

I got the same set up about a year ago,, 32" lcd with hdmi ect. What you need to buy is an 'up converting dvd player' a samsung dvd-hd850 is a good example. it will convert the ntsc,, 480i to 1080i and send it up the hdmi port to the hdtv. make sure you set the tv to display 1080i from THE TV's menu, and then set the DVD player to output 1080i. thay can both display 480i, 480p, 768p or 1080i,, set carefully and you should be impressed with the picture,, however,, the dvd's resolution is just 480i, unforunatly, even in wide screen. For a full HD picture the TV is capable of we must all go out and purchase the new hddvd or blueray players from sony and others. that will give you full hd picture,, but the cost is a little out of the ball opark right now,, about 1k for the hddvd brand and 500 for the blueray,, same out put but diff dvd formats. You also have to buy the dvd on hddvd or blueray format too,l won't work with the present dvd's, info just isn't there, wait awhile on these. C. e-mail me for how to display a cable pic correctly, whew!
PS componant video isn't the same as RCA, Componant is ypbpr with with a L & R sound output and deos carry 1080i. C.

Be sure to check the manual or data sheet on your up-converting DVD player. Most players output up-converted signals (1080i or 720p) on their HDMI outputs only. Component cables will carry 480i or 480p. If you need an HDMI cable, do not pay too much: check this site http://www.ehdmi.com/hdmi.html

Why in the world would you buy a nice rig and not use the best cables? HDMI supplies both digital video and digital audio, and reduced the cables you have to use. Go with HDMI all the way!
