You can't single out between growing up with someone or meeting someone new at work. There are pluses and minuses for both. What it really comes down to is the beliefs and interests of the indviduals and which one is stronger or could develop to be a strong relationship. It is not something that happens overnight even if it is someone you have known your whole life.

It has nothing to do with knowing someone for a while or meeting someone knew... it depends on your feelings for that person.
You should choose the one who you have the most feelings for that has the same feelings for you.
