I'm an Atheist and I know exactly why you believe in God.

1. You believe in God because you just can't understand how this big Universe just formed on its own

2. You want to feel safe. A good way to do that is imagine there's a skydaddy keeping you safe

3. You're playing the better safe than sorry game. You figure if you're wrong about the existence of God, you have nothing to lose

4. There's a lot of things you dont understand. So, you just dump everything you dont understand into the God box. That comforts your fear of the unknown

5. You were raised to believe in God. It's more of a culture than a belief. Even if you stop believing. You wont admit it because you can't let go of the culture

6. You can't logically figure out the unexplained experiences you've had. So, you just write them off as God's work

7. You couldn't even take how stupid you would feel to think there's no God and you've been tricked. It's too bad to be true for you.

Well, Jesus returned from the dead and appeared to over 500 witnesses (according to Paul) to show that he was alive again.

I don't know if this answers your question or not, but one of the main reasons that I believe in Christianity is that the people who knew Jesus were willing to be tortured to death rather than change their story that they saw Jesus return from the dead.

If the apostles were lying about seeing the resurrected Christ, then why didn't they take back their story when they were individually being tortured to death? Every one of the apostles (Except John, who died a natural death in exile on Patmos), were killed for their faith. Wouldn't a liar recant this story to save his own life?

What did the apostles have to gain by making it all up? What good does power, control or fame do for a dead person?

I accept the apostles' story because the witnesses were creditable.

PS: Yes, I have heard the crack about suicide bombers, but the main difference between the modern bombers & the apostles are: (1) the bombers did not see Mommand personally, so they are not eye-witnesses to anything (Unlike Peter, & Paul, who claimed to see Jesus alive with their own eyes and then died rather than take it back); and, (2) the bombers are killing innocent people (others) for their faith, not suffering for it (I assume that blowing yourself up is quick & painless compared with being crucified.).

Of course, I can only speak for my personal faith, and cannot presume to be the spokesman for all of those who believe in God.

1. I can understand: God made it.
2. God doesn't necessarily keep Christians safer than anyone else. The safety is in knowing that whatever harm comes, the tribulation will be over someday.
3. Nope. That's not faith, that's reason. Religion is based on faith. It's not some fire insurance policy.
4. Failure to understand is common to all human beings. This is because the creation cannot fathom the mind of its creator.
5. While I was raised to believe in God, the reason I have not rejected my religion is because by faith I see that it is true.
6. I haven't got any unexplained experiences. I can't always see the hand of god, but I know he's there.
7. I have never actually thought about this. If you believe because you're scared of being wrong, that is a sad faith.

And you, atheist? How did you come to be? The galaxy sneezed? The ape left the tree? How could something as wonderful as a human being be a result of anything but intelligent creation? I'm curious to know what you think.

And you face these fears, of the unkown and of danger beyond your control? You're strong enough, you can handle the fear by yourself? You'd rather be outspoken against religion than accept it and be looked down upon as someone who gave in?

I don't mean to attack you, I'm curious. I don't see how you can't believe anything. I might post a question about it tomorrow.

I think atheist have a good reason not to believe in God because of what has been done in the name of religion.

However I believe that religion has done a lot of damage in the name of God and have misrepresented the Bible.

For me none of your above statements are true

I believe in God because of knowledge. My knowledge has built faith in the Bible and in God.

I examined the theory of evolution and it does not match true science.

I do not believe in creation over 6 literal days but in creation over 6 periods or epochs of time of unknown length. That fits in with true science.

So my belief in God and the Bible is solidly built on knowledge and fact.

Actually, you have no clue why I believe in God. Just like I have no idea why you don't. Don't pretend to know anything about me.

Who knows, maybe one day you will have a life-changing experience that will change your mind. Remember that Paul was once Saul, a persecutor of Christians, before God appeared to him and changed his life.

In fairness, there should be a #8: You have the undeniable feeling in your gut that there is a higher power. The older people get, the more they feel this. BUT that is not to say that "God" exists. It could simply be a survival mechanism so that we don't break up as a society and lose the advantage of safety and education in numbers. So if you accept the idea of natural selection this explains why 95% of people (supposedly) believe in "God". I'd say I can't disagree with any of your reasons 1-7.

Wow. You're wrong on all points. I would have thought, being the smart atheist that you are, that you'd get at least one right. Gee, I'll have to reevaluate my perceptions of atheists.
