and found out minutes later that the dog no longer lived there, but was not dead either. (I had no idea that the friend even had dogs)

It was a GHOST of the dog that used to live there... sprinkle holy water in some puppy chow and leave it on the roof and that with banish the critter

In our country some people particularly in the remotest part can transform into animals like pigs, crows and dogs. They are known as "aswang"-creatures who feast on fresh blood particularly of pregnant women. You'd better be careful.
