I had both Norton and Macafee on my machine when I bought it. I removed Macafee and it's been running fine for the last year and three quarters with just Norton on it. I uninstalled it through the 'Add and Remove Programs' program located in the Windows Control Panel.

The reason is that all anti-virus software applications do essentially the same things. If your computer has two anti-virus applications running simultaneously, this creates the possibility that they will try to do exactly the same thing at more or less the same time. This possibility is not what the applications or the operating system are designed to deal with, and serious interruption of performance could occur.
False Alarms: When the anti-virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.

Are you talking about anti-virus, or internet security software?
You can't operate more than one anti-virus programme at one time. When I install new anti-virus software, I un-install the old before installing the new. Otherwise, one will conflict with the other. My experience with Norton, is that if you try to install it, it will detect any other anti-virus software that is running, & warn you before you continue installing.
To un-install, in XP go to "All Programmes" & look up the software you want to remove & see if there is an un-install utility in the list.
Failing that, go to "Control Panel" select "Add Remove Programmes" then "Change or Remove Programmes" select the programme you want to remove, & select "Remove"
P.S
I like Symantec (Norton) way better than McAfee

Yes. It won't harm windows at all, just uninstall it through the add/remove programs tool in the control panel. Keeping both running will actually cause more problems and give you a lot of headaches because each program will detect a virus and quarantine it in an encrypted folder that can't be accessed by the other program, and the virus messages will never stop. If you want an excellent free antivirus with free updates, consider downloading avg free antivirus at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
Good luck.

Yes it's fine. If anything, you'll have conflicts with both installed (those programs like to fight). Go to Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs. Highlight the program you want to remove and select remove.
Good luck!

Uninstalling one will not cause problems.
I would take McAfee over Norton though.
