Yes, if it's severe and prevents you from working, you can.

You will also need to provide the following documents to apply;
* your Social Security card or a record of your Social Security number;
* your birth certificate or other proof of your age. If you do not have a birth certificate, you may request one from the State where you were born. See Where to Write for Vital Records for details on where to write in your State.
* information about the home where you live, such as your mortgage or your lease and landlord's name;
* payroll slips, bank books, insurance policies, burial fund records, and other information about your income and the things you own;
* if you're signing up for disability, the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of doctors, hospitals, and clinics that have seen you; and
* proof of U.S. citizenship or eligible non-citizen status.

It's a really long, annoying, and frustrating process... but yes, you can receive SSI or SSD for major depression if it is so severe that you can not work as per your doctors orders. I have heard from most people that getting approved for it is very hard. I have been on disability for mental health issues since January of 2005. In NJ, you have to be on temporary disability for 6 months before you can apply for SSI/SSD. Once I was out for the 6 month period, I applied for ssi/ssd. It took 8 months, but I was eventually approved on my first try for SSD. I have been hospitalized 9 times in the past year and have several doctors and therapists that I see or have seen, so my case had a lot of documentation. The more information you send them, the better chance you have of getting approved. Good luck! If you need any help or would just like to talk, feel free to message me here anytime.

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: The Social Security Administration (SSA) looks less at a clinical diagnosis itself, and more at whether or not your condition prevents you from working. SSA runs 2 different disability benefit programs:

Supplement Security Income (SSI)
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

Both programs require that you prove that you cannot do work that you did before and that you cannot adjust to other work because of your medical condition(s). Your disability must also last or be expected to last for at least 12 months or to result in death. SSA defines work as any month in which you earn $860 gross (in 2006) or more. This amount goes up a little each year.

To be eligible for SSI you cannot have more than $2,000 in resources ($3,000 for a couple). There are some things SSA does not count as resources - the home you live in; household goods and personal effects; your wedding and engagement rings; burial spaces for you or your immediate family; burial funds for you and your spouse, each valued at $1,500 or less; life insurance policies with a combined face value of $1,500 or less; and one vehicle.

SSDI does not have a limit on the resources you have.

So see if you may be eligible check out SSA's Benefit Eligibility Screening Tool at: http://www.ssa.gov/d&s1.htm

It also helps to talk with others who've been through the application process. This is a good group from which I've learned a lot: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ssadisability/

Good luck!

well, yes, if you are so depressed and cant function enough to hold a job even after you have honestly tried all of the things your psychiatrist has given you. but ssi isnt any way to live. you dont get very much money. certainly not enough to live on. i really recommend you try very hard to not end up on ssi.
