i generally keep to myself. The question is why do girls say hi to me that a rarely ever talk to. And would these girls actually be willing to go out with me if i had the courage to ask?

Some people are just very friendly... You will never know unless you ask.
Next time one of these girls says "Hi" strike up a conversation.. With in a few minutes you will know if she was saying "Hi" as a passing thing or not... If you get a good vibe ask her out for a drink and see if things progress..
If it doesn't work out with the first girl remember you said girls (plural)... A fisherman doesn't go out on his first trip and catch the "BIG FISH" of the lake.. Keep casting...

I greet guys all the time while I'm walking to my classes or around my dorm. Most girls I know do.
We don't always do it be flirts, but sometimes we do. If you want to ask these girls out, then go for it. Never know until you ask.

I know that I always make an effort to speak to people who appear to be shy. It's hard to say if they're interested in dating you.

they might. just be confident with yourself even if your not much of a talker.. lack of confidence is unattractive.. same goes for you girls
