Unfortunately your body will adjust on its own but here are the best tips:

1. On the flight - drink no alcohol (water & juice only) and eat light.
2. Drink coffee (on the flight) based on you 'new time'
3. When you get on plane - set your watch to new time and 'think like that' time zone (eat and sleep according to new zone).
4. When you go to sleep at night (at your new hotel/destination) - open your window shades so the sun will help wake you up in am.
5. The most effective way to click in is to be active when you would otherwise be sleeping (resting in your hotel room - will trigger you to sleep) and sleep when you should.
6. THE MAIN THING TO DO IS 'MIND OVER MATTER' - do not recognize jet lag and pretend it does not exist etc. Use sunlight, coffee, and activity (anything but sitting around) to stay awake.

The other approach that works well is to get really really drunk before you leave (the day before) then you will be hungover and sleepy the whole next day on the flight (which is like sleeping in the 'new' time zone). This will help jumpstart the process.
I do not recommend sleeping aides etc. - they will usually backfire.
hope that helps

One way is to start using your destination timing just before your departure, that is to sleep at destination nite time, eat at destination's meal times. this will force your body clock to start adjusting to the revised time zone and acclimatise faster. Continue with that timing while inflight till you reach your destination. You should rest as much as you can while flying and once you land, get into some physical exercises to get used to the time there.

I do it for long flights and can recover in a day. Nothing else. So have a go.
