Pain is your body's way of saying, "HEY STUPID YOU HURT ME." First, stop whatever you did to pull the muscle. If there is any pain that rediates/moves down the arm or tingling, get to a doctor ASAP.
For the first 72 hours ice the area, ten minutes on and at least thirty off, several times a day. After three days try hot packs/heat several times a day, including a hot bath or shower, where you slowly move the shoulder.
Take an anti-inflamatory medication like Tylenol but follow the directions and don't take too much or you could have what is called rebound pain.
Let the shoulder relax for a week or more. No one sided activities like vacuuming, cleaning. Watch what you lift and try to avoid anything over one pound.
IF the pain continues for more than a week, go to a doctor. There are several injuries to the shoulder than cannot heal without medical intervention.

Try to rest the shoulder - don't move it anymore than you have to for a few days. Ice it for the first 48 hours (for about 15 minutes 3 or 4 times a day). Then alternate ice and heat for a few days. Ice will reduce the inflammation and heat will increase circulation and healing.

Carefully! It's hard to do anything without reinjuring, if it's a recent injury ice might be better than heat, try a NSAID like Alleve to help bring down any swelling. Try to rest it as much as possible and/or try a few exercises to slowly strengthen it again. See a chiropractor - they are great at things like that, don't subscribe a bunch of meds and run up huge bills, and I think the care they give is just better.

You need days until the muscle heals. You need to immobilize the muscle you pulled and not use it for a few days until it heal, then start exercise and moving it slowly, If you are in a lot of pain see your doctor for xrays to confirm that it is only muscle damage. Your doc will recommend Physical therapy to exercise that muscle...feel better
